vSphere 6.5 what is new and what I like
VMware announced vSphere 6.5 recently. I was looking at the enhancement and thinking why should I go for vSphere 6.5 .There are some good reason I will be going for vSphere 6.5
1.vSphere Client – HTML-5 based GUI .
Webclient is a pain in the ass ..To be frank guys I hate webclient especially the flash based webclient . Many times I thought a great company like VMware why they choose webclient especially flash based .I do not think VMware decision where smart while choosing webclient (flash based) .Anyway I am going to stop complaining after this post because I am going to try HTML-5 based webclient which they claim is good!
Few other enhancements I am interested with this version will be (Thanks to Duncan Epping from Yellow-Bricks)
2.Automatic space reclamation : This is based on VAAI unmap which has been around for a while.Storage capacity is reclaimed and released to the array so that if needed other volumes can use these blocks. In past a command has to be issued in order to reclaim the blocks, now this has been integrated in the UI and can be simply turned ON or OFF
3.Support for 512 devices and 2000 paths : In previous version the limit was 256 devices and 1024 paths .My customers was hitting this limit .
4.VM level disk encryption :capability designed to protect against unauthorized data access
5.Encrypted vMotion capability:vSphere can safeguard both data at-rest and data in-motion
These are my top5
Few other enhancements according to VMware 6.5 datasheets are
.Audit-quality logging: Enhanced logging that provides forensic information about user actions
.vCenter server high availability
.vCenter server backup and restore
.Security-at-scale – Policy-driven security that makes securing infrastructure operationally simple
.Secure boot: Protection for both the hypervisor and guest operating system by ensuring images have not been tampered with and preventing loading of unauthorized components
.vSphere integrated containers– virtual infrastructure platform for containers
.Proactive-HA :High availability capability that utilizes server health information and migrates VMs from degraded hosts before problem occurs
.Cross-cloud vMotion: Live migrate workloads between virtual based clouds
.Virtual volumes replication
