Virtual Machine not pinging -How to troubleshoot?
Trouble Scenario
My test VM with a static IP 10.x.x.27 stopped pinging after host migration
I was trying to find an answer for 2 questions
- Why my VM stopped pinging after migration ?
- why I am getting a reply from a different ip?
VM is running on an esxi 5.5 host. I have also noticed that some VMs on the host is pinging but some not pinging
Finding the root cause
(Thanks to Mr. Aram Avetisyan for giving me a hint, that helped me to identify the issue fast. Mr. Aram is a blogger and VMware teacher. You can follow him on thevirtualist )
Some VM is pinging but some not pinging was a good clue helped me to identify the culprit fast. I connected the problematic esxi host via ssh and did an esxtop (type n to go to network view).
I have noticed VM using vmnic1 working fine but VMs which use vmnic2 does not work. My environment is using vDistributed Switch and health checking is enabled so I then checked if health checking is showing any error. I have found a configuration issue
(This is the reason I really like VMware because many of their features are very useful if you really know how to use them and when to use them) 🙄
Even if you do not have health check enabled you can identify the issue fast if you ask yourself this question ¨Why some vm is pinging, but some not¨
Root cause
I have 2 physical NIC used for production work load. One of my production NIC (vmnic2)does not have any trunk configured on physical switch side. Problem solved after adding trunk!
Now I would like to hear from you
Do you know why I was getting a reply from an ip other than my static ip?
whyiblog is all about sharing knowledge,if you have any tip/hint feel free to share with me.
Have a good day
